Stanley Cup Future Odds NHL Pick
September 27, 2011
In the 2011 preseason, the Boston Bruins were 25/1 odds to win the Stanley Cup – considerable longshots to the Canucks and Flyers atop the list.
Their best player (Marc Savard) was recovering from a concussion, their goaltending was questionable after an off year from Tim Thomas and the offense didn’t look great either.
But fast-forward to June and the Bruins were defeating the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in the Cup final, making big winners out of those early Bruin bettors at 25/1.
This is known as NHL future betting or Odds to win the Stanley Cup and they are offered all year round. They can be profitable, but they should be handled with care, much like NHL MVP odds, odds to win the Eastern Conference and other bets that look far into the future.
The payout can be nice, but it ties up your money in that bet for a long time. Bruin bettors who wagered $100 in September got a nice $2,500 payout but they had to wait until June to get it. For this reason, it pays to have just a few smallish bet on NHL future lines.
At the start of 2011-2012 season, the defending Western Conference champion Canucks were tied at 7/1 for the best odds to win the Stanley Cup.
No other Canadian team appeared on the list until Montreal at 25/1. Others were much further down the list.
