Winnipeg Jets Longshots for Stanley Cup
June 02, 2011
Winnipeg fans now have a team again but how close are they to finally winning a Stanley Cup?
Oddsmakers set the transplanted Atlanta Thrashers, who will move to Winnipeg next season, at 80/1 odds, according to Bodog sportsbook.
Back in 1996, the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver to become the Avalanche and won the Cup in their first season. However, the Thrashers have never won a playoff game and to expect them to suddenly emerge over regular-season East champion Washington and Cup semi-finalist Tampa Bay in the tough Southeast Division is a much bigger task.
“It’s a feel-good story of a Canadian city getting its team back, but the Jets or Northern Thrashers are no threat to win the Cup,” said Jack Randall of odds aggregator OddsShark.com. “That’s why the odds to win the division are so high at 16/1 at this time of the year.”
Betting on whether the team will revert to its old nickname of Jets are another wager you can make. Ditto, an over under on points for the regular season and whether former Jet Teemu Selanne will go back to Manitoba for a season.
